Back to School

08/01/2018

It is almost time for our children to head back to school and there is so much that is on the minds of parents, teachers, coaches and other teen mentors alike.

We know a new school year can mean new relationships for our teens.  Of course we do not want to think of any teen that we care about falling victim to dating violence, but the realty is that 1 in 3 youth is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner.  This fact cannot be ignored, but it can be difficult to notice the warning signs or to even knkow what to do if you suspect your teen is at risk or in danger.

What You Can Do:

  • Talk to your child and spend time with them.
  • Provide examples of a healthy relationship.
  • Teach self-respect.
  • Keep the lines of communication open.
  • Ask questions about their daily life.
  • Encourage your child not to rush into relationships.
  • Help the teen to develop a safety plan.
  • Connect with SafeHomes - 706-736-2499

Safety Planning with your Teen:

  • Help your child to be prepared and able to take control of the situation.
  • Help your child establish open lines of communication at school with teachers, coaches, friends, counselors, ect.
  • Ask your child if they want to change their school schedule to avoid conflict.
  • Ask your child if someone can walk them between classes and after school.
  • Advise your child to always have their cell phone and a wallet with emergency cash.
